Quartu Sant'Elena

Quartu Sant’Elena is a town in the province of Cagliari. With more than 70000 inhabitants, it is the third town in Sardinia after Cagliari and Sassari.

Its territory includes two thirds of the Molentargius Natural Park recognized as one the most important wetlands in Europe. Here, many rare species such as Pink Flamingos, Pied Avocets, Black-winged Stilts, Western Marsh Harriers and Purple Swamphens nest.

In the past, its economy was based on agriculture and sheep farming. There are two museums about the tradition of Quartu Sant’Elena, “Sa Dom’e Farra” and “Il Ciclo della Vita”. Sa Dom’e Farra hosts about 8000 daily objects which are linked to the Sardinian tradition ( from 28th century BC to the 20th century AD).

Quartu Sant’Elena hosts several famous events and festivals. One of the most important is the “Sciampitta” that takes place every year in June with many folklorist groups from everywhere in the world.

Moreover, the town boasts 26 Km of beautiful beaches. The most important is the “Poetto”, known for its white sand, it extends as far as Cagliari. It is the most popular beach among the Quartu Sant’Elena, Cagliari and surroundings inhabitants.
